Getting on the road fast? This is how long it takes to get your driving licence.

Whether you want to ride a scooter, bought a moped, want to hit the road with a trailer or dream of a motorbike - each driving licence has its own route. Some you can get within a day, others take a bit more time and practice. Below you can read exactly what to expect.

Scooter or moped licence (AM)

The scooter driving licence (AM2) is the fastest driving licence of all. You can take it on the road from the age of 16, and many driving schools, including Xpress rijopleiding, allow you to get your scooter licence in one day. You'll have lessons in the morning and take your exam at the end of the day. So if you've passed the theory before, you can drive independently within one day.

It also moped driving licence (AM4) you can often pass in one day, including practical exams. Ideal if you prefer to drive safely and dry on four wheels. Just make sure you pass your theory exam beforehand - you can do so from the age of 15.5.

Car licence (B)

The car licence (B) requires a little more time. Most students need between 35 and 45 lessons before taking practical exams. How long that takes depends on how much you study: with one or two lessons a week, you will usually take three to six months.

If you want to go faster, you can opt for a crash course. This allows you to get your driving licence in as little as two to four weeks. You will then drive almost every day and schedule the exam immediately. This also applies to people who cannot speak Dutch, but do speak English and already have some experience. The shift car licence teaches you to drive a manual gearbox. If you get this licence, you will also be allowed to drive an automatic. If you choose a automatic driving licence, then you may only drive automatic cars. An automatic is often easier to learn, allowing some students to pass faster - but it does limit what you can drive.

Trailer driving licence (BE)

Want to drive a caravan, boat trailer or horse trailer? Then you need a BE driving licence. And like the scooter licence, you can get it in 1 day. You'll have intensive practical lessons in the morning and take an exam in the afternoon.

The Get BE driving licence in 1 day costs are around €600 in most cases, depending on your experience. That price then includes everything: lessons, use of the car and trailer, and the practical exam.

Motorbike licence (A)

Do you dream of freedom on two wheels? Then the motorbike licence (A) something for you. How long this takes depends on your age and the type of bike you are taking the exam on. There are three categories:

  • A1 (from 18 years of age): light motorbike up to 125cc.

  • A2 (from 20 years of age): medium engine.

  • A (from 24 years of age): unlimited power.

On average, you need 20 to 30 lessons. You start with vehicle control (AVB), followed by the practical road test (AVD).
