Frequently asked questions about getting a moped licence

  • Minimum age: To take your theory exam, the minimum age is 15.5 years. For the practical exam, you must be at least 16 years old to get your moped licence.
  • Medical requirements: There are no specific medical requirements for the moped licence, but you must be healthy enough to drive safely.
  • Id: You have a valid identity document needed (e.g. a passport or ID card).
  • Number of questions: The theory exam consists of 50 questions.
  • Topics covered: Traffic rules, traffic insight, risk perception and vehicle knowledge.
  • Exam duration: The exam takes about 45 minutes.
  • Success rate: To pass, you must answer at least 44 out of 50 questions correctly.
  • Available learning resources: You can use books, online course or classroom theory course. You can get all these learning tools from our driving school. 
  • Tips for self-study: Start on time, make a study schedule, use different learning methods, and practice regularly with mock exams.
  • How much time you need to study: This varies from person to person, but on average, most people spend several weeks preparing.
  • Lesson content: Basic skills, traffic insight, agility and driving techniques.
  • Number of lessons required: This varies, but on average, 4 to 8 hours of practical lessons are sufficient.
  • Cost of lessons: Costs vary by situation. Driving lesson packages cost around €40 to €50 per hour, while single driving lesson rates are €60 per lesson hour.
  • Cost of theory exam: €59.
  • Cost of practical lessons: Average €159 to €359, depending on the number of lessons.
  • Cost of the practical exam: €219 for a regular exam.
  • Validity period: The moped licence is valid for 10 years.
  • Renewal process: You need to apply for a new driving licence at the municipality. This requires a new passport photo and payment of an administration fee.
  • Maximum speed: 45 km/h on the carriageway, 30 km/h on the cycle track inside built-up areas, and 40 km/h on the cycle track outside built-up areas.
  • Permitted roads: You may drive on the carriageway, bicycle lanes and moped lanes, depending on local traffic rules.
  • Mandatory safety equipment: Helmet (for moped and moped riders with a construction speed above 25 km/h), working lights and reflectors.
  • How many times you may participate again: You may re-enter as many times as necessary.
  • Waiting period for re-examination: There is no mandatory waiting period, but you have to make a new appointment.
  • Cost of re-examination: The cost for a retake is the same as for the first exam.
  • For people with different driving licences: If you already have a car licence (B), you do not need to get a separate moped licence.
  • For people with disabilities: There are special arrangements and adapted exams for people with disabilities.
