How old do you need to be for a motorbike licence?

What are the age limits for motorbike licences?

In the Netherlands, there are three categories:

• A1 (light motorbike) - as of 18 years

What are you allowed to drive with A1?

With a A1 driving licence you may ride light motorbikes up to 125 cc and 11 kW output.
These bikes are agile and perfect for novice riders.
Many youngsters choose A1 to gain experience before moving on to A2.

What are you allowed to drive with A2?

With the A2 driving licence you may drive medium-duty motorbikes with a power output of up to 35 kW.
You can get this licence:

• directly on your 20th anniversary, or
• two years after your A1 licence (step-up variant).

A2 is popular among motorcyclists who already have some experience and want to switch to a more powerful bike.

When can you get the full A licence?

The A licence Gives you unlimited motorbike licence.
You can make it:

• directly from 24 years, or
• two years after A2, so usually around 22.

This licence allows you to ride any type of motorbike, from sports bike to touring bike.

Can you start lessons before age?

Yes, you may usually a few weeks before your birthday start lessons as long as the practical exam takes place after your minimum age.
That means you can practise in advance so you can take the exam right after your birthday.

How does the theory for the motorbike licence work?

For any motorbike licence, you must have a theoretical exam get at the CBR.
If you already have a car licence (B) have, you don't have to do theory again for switching between A1, A2 or A.
