How does getting your scooter driving licence (AM) work?

The short answer: to get your scooter driving licence (AM) to pass a theoretical exam and a practical test at CBR.
From 16 years you may drive a scooter or moped independently, but you may start theory from as early as 15.5 years.

What are the requirements to start your scooter driving licence?

You may:

• from 15.5 years take theory exams at the CBR;
• from 16 years take practical lessons and pass practical tests;
• start without a car licence (the AM licence is independent).

The scooter driving licence is compulsory for anyone driving a moped, moped or scooter wants to govern.

How does the theory exam proceed?

The theory exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions On traffic rules, traffic insight and hazard recognition.
You should minimum 44 good have to succeed.

What does the practical exam look like?

During the practical exam, you show that you can drive safely in traffic.
The examiner assesses:

• your vehicle control (such as pulling away, steering and braking);
• traffic insight (lining up, speed, looking);
• and whether you reacts safely to other road users.

The exam takes about 45 minutes, including explanations.
You will ride a scooter provided by the driving school and receive a clear briefing beforehand.

How many driving lessons do you need on average?

It varies from person to person.
Most students have between 4 and 8 practical lessons needed to be ready for the exam.
If you already have some experience cycling in heavy traffic or have good traffic insight, you can take the exam faster.

What are you allowed to drive with a scooter driving licence?

With the AM driving licence you may:

• a moped (max. 45 km/h) driving;
• a moped (max 25 km/h);
• a scooter;
• and in many cases also a moped (if registered as an AM vehicle).

Please note that the AM driving licence applies not for motorbikes - you have a separate A1 driving licence needed.

How long is the scooter driving licence valid?

The AM driving licence is valid for 10 years, just like the car licence.
After that period, you have to get it renewed at the municipality.
Did you later get a car licence (B)? Then AM is automatically added - you no longer need to take a separate exam.
