Moped riders required to wear helmet

Helmet requirement for moped riders and passengers from Jan 1, 2023

From 1 January 2023, it will be compulsory to wear a helmet on a moped in the Netherlands. This is part of the "Helm op" campaign, which makes young people aware of the dangers of riding without a helmet. If you are about to get your moped licence or motorbike licence, it is important to know that these new rules will affect your daily transportation. Wearing a helmet can save your life in case of an accident. It reduces the risk of serious head injuries, which can make a big difference between a minor accident and something much more serious. Both for people with a moped licence as for those with a motorbike licence who ride a moped, it is now important to wear a helmet when they hit the road.

What happens if you don't want to wear a helmet?

For many young people, their hair is important - you've probably spent a lot of time styling it, and the idea of 'ruining' it with a helmet isn't exactly appealing then. But if you decide to hit the road without a helmet from now on, you risk a €100.00 fine. In addition, the police may stop you for a check, which will not only delay your ride but also make it uncomfortable.

And that's not all. If you ignore the rules more often, it could jeopardise your driving licence. Violations can lead to an investigation into your driving record, which has serious implications for your ability to continue driving. So while you may not want to 'ruin' your hair, it is much more important to put on a helmet and stay safe. In the end, your driving licence is worth much more than a haircut!

What are the alternatives?

If you are not a fan of wearing a helmet, there are few alternatives if you want to use a moped or scooter. The law is clear: a helmet is a must. Still want to go out without a helmet? Then you can opt for a different form of transport, such as a moped (where you have a moped driving licence needed for it), the car (with a valid a car licence), public transport or cycling. But if you really want to keep using your moped or motorbike, the helmet is the only option to get on the road safely and legally.
